deadguy: I think Cordy has a soft spot for Buffy despite the way she chose to ally with the 'geeks' right back in WTTH (though it was only part choice) ...it's my personal opinion that as she's grown up she's been tending to not automatically judge people by social standing (except as old habits dying hard) and she was naturally attracted to Buffy right at the start... I mean, face it, apart from the Vampire Slaying gig, they would (especially if you look back at the BtVS movie character) have a lot in common.. however, this is probably all babble so I'm lurking now

For fastest getting of tapes, I'd think finding someone in Northern Europe who has them and is willing to make you copies (of the from-broadcast type, not, of course, the commercial tapes, cause that would be wrong) would be the best way to go. (In addition to being into eachother) But remember- Buffy was walking past them and Xander stopped her. And Cordy's never been one for tact, so why would she take a break from the ear sucking? But Xander? He could have started talking to Buffy when she didn't have to stand there watching them. Did you see the look on her face when Cordy told Xander how turned on she was? with "I'm the Slayer" of dating ringing in her ears?

Gonna post again..

Erestor: Glad to be your Wing anytime.

LB: Xander may very well be blinded by his endless infatuation with Buffy and unable to see past it as far as Angel being the one who got to her first. That and he's missing the vital part of the equation..they all are..Buffy didn't kill Angelus..she "killed" Angel. Xander views the death of Angelus as something that showed have happened long before Jenny was murdered so he lacks both sympathy and empathy in that department aided by his hatred for Angel..which I still believe is because Xand in a way feels betrayed because right as he started to reluctantly trust Angel..he changed. And I also suspect that Xand has never fully grasped that Buffy truly loved Angel and that it was more than just a case of hot chick falling for hot dangerous guy..

Alex Don't get me wrong, I've never thought Xander was a jerk. In fact, I've been impressed with his chivalry and maturity on a number of occasions. But I was surprised at how adament he has always been that "Angelus" should die. (even when Giles was not) As of right now he only knows that Buffy killed Angelus. Which to him should be no big deal. (that's why he couldn't understand how that could have been such a trauma to Buffy that she had to run away) I think his #1 sticking point is that if he really cared for Buffy he would be a little more compassionate about how killing even Angelus would be tramatic for her. It would mean the death of any hope that she could get Angel back. As for projecting his feelings about himself onto her...I don't know......

SPOILERISH MORE OR LESS

*LB*, Alex -- I expect that Xander, 17 year old that he is, has conflicting emotions. He was certainly showing Buffy that he didn't need her in his life to be happy, and I'm sure he enjoyed being Alpha Slayerette (his comment about ruining their lives for the last three months didn't really ring true, except in the "we worried about you every minute" kind of way), but I also think he was over the top with his proof of independence, and at least part of his anger was defensive -- I'll bash you before you bash me -- and another part was/is projection, as Alex says.

I'm about ready to hit my ever-welcoming pillow, so hope everyone has a good night!!

erestor - I agree that the "Plunge and move on" thing would get old, and I'm certainly not saying I don't want the other things to show up around the Hellmouth (Joss forbid I came across like that, even though I think I did), but if we're going to focus on non-Hellmouthy stuff (how to get through the results of last summer, etc.), I'd stick with the simpler version of the creature features, IMHO. Maybe that's why I'm in the sciences and not into the visual arts/performance. Feel free to reply if ya like, I'll be sure to check.

-Lady of Buffdom I'm off to battle the insane teacher...wish me luck and the power of the Slayer!!

Erestor I'm not bailing yet :)

AKA Becker You're right, Giles is smart, and they do have that in common. Remember Buffy having such intense fears about her father and the divorce but in her talk with Willow she reiterated several times "But he comes down on weekends!" Perhaps she's grown too used to getting out her aggression in a physical sense and talking actually comes in second.

SPOILER

Alex He also called her an idiot. My guess is that Xander's ego has grown by leaps and bounds this summer. After all, when Buffy's away, he's the leader. He gets a code name and a walkie talkie (want to bet they were both his idea?) And I actually thought he was rather smugly preoccupied with Cordy during the party. He was one satisfied homeboy!

Lady of Buffdom -- I'm with Erestor in that I also like the MOtW eps, and would find 22 eps of vamps pretty botring. Half the fun of watching is to see what twist Joss and crew will put in old favorites (they haven't done The Blob, yet...), and giving Buffy new challenges in the Slaying department, since she already knows how to overcome vamps and can do the drill in her sleep.

Alex -- I don't think, as I've said before, that a total breakdown would play in TVland, mostly because it takes so long to truly recover from one, and we can't have Buffy out of commission for that long. I do think Xander has some major stuff he needs to understand and face, and while I don't think he was wrong to withhold the info about Willow trying the curse again, there's fallout needs to happen and be dealt with. I think the one who will be the most horrified, though, will be Willow -- especially after the things she said to Buffy in tonight's ep. Yes, she's going through a lot of scarey life stuff, but in this particular case, it wouldn't have been about her, anyway, until Buffy got some necessary grieving and forgiving done.

LB...my take on that is such that Buffy has been dreaming of Angel all summer..he's become almost a companion in her dreams..whether actually Angel or her mind creating another one to help the pain. She wasn't at all surprised to see him and seemed to take it all naturally in stride. Also there was nothing malicious about what he was saying to her and I believe her words were to the effect that her pain is far from over and her life is going to continue to turn nauseatingly mad circles.

Especially since he's now yelled at her about being selfish. Xand has some things of his own to answer for.

Kim!: Absoloutely. I think t'night was the first crack that given a little more pushing could have caused the wall to crumble but Buffy is a pro at plastering it back together and she did. Eventually she is going to have to face her own emotions..something made her leave..made her feel like she had no choice..she has got to deal with that or eventually it's gonna tear her up.

I used to be a proponent of a complete breakdown but tight now I just support a loss of emotional control in front of the gang..I think that's where it should be..and I think it would be a poignant if not terrifying experience for the gang.

**Spoilerlike**

*LB*: Well I belive it was Giles who stopped Buffy from mentioning her summer while they were having tea in his apartment. She said "long story" but it would have come out eventually if Giles, being the authority figure, didn't nip it. Didn't Buffy's dream with Angel allude to her revealing something or facing her actions re: the Slayerettes? I'm a bit unclear and will have to watch that part again. I'm not sure about her reluctance to tell about Lily or the "time portal hellish place." I would think it's just that she needs time to sort things out as it probably took a good deal of her courage just to face her friends again.

**Spoilerlikeness above**

Hi ROANNA! Get better, ok?

I really enjoyed tonight's episode, especially the part when Giles takes on Snyder (Yay, Giles!!!). I would love to get back to the vampire slayage thing, and do a little less with the other things that are attracted to the Hellmouth (Question: How did the Nigerian mask find it's way to the Hellmouth? Is it the evil energy influencing the actions of people who have no direct connection to the Hellmouth, i.e., the people at the museum that sent the mask to Joyce's museum...or is it just me?). I miss Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and so far, Buffy the fighter of everything else isn't working for me. I'll trust Joss to come up with the usual amazing storylines, and I do know that these other issues with Buffy's leaving need to be worked out, and the demons and such need to be secondary for a while. I loved how Buffy and Xander met for the first time when she came back, though, stakes and all. I'm sorry that I can't remember who said this, but the current plotlines are leaving a lot of room for really good stuff later on, so I'll just have to wait expectantly for that. I also think that once the Scooby Gang learns the whole story (which I obviously think they don't know yet), they'll understand more where Buffy's coming from and why she had to leave, but I still think it'll take a while to work through stuff, especially with Xander.

This thing about Marti working on Fantasy Island sounds all wrong. She has an office just a few feet away from RD'd desk. She lives in the Buffy offices. I don't think that she has had time to do anything else, unless it was a one off type thing. As far as her eps, Bad Eggs was the only I wasn't that fond of, and I only had minor issues with I Only Have Eyes for You, but WML1 & 2, Innocence/Surprise, BBB and this one were all excellent. Oh, she's rocks in person too. And she's a hottie on top of it all. You just can't lose with Marti but you can strike out

kim!: I'm bouble checking the weather channel, but I swear that I saw that it's been snowing in col-orado in the last day or so.

Erestor: Hello! I had to clarify. I was getting frustrated with people taking my arguement as that I couldn't understand why she left. She got off easy, Giles could have ripped into her as well.

*LB*: Both A & B. He knows that she just got back and that if she was leaving without talking to anyone, opening right up to a whole crowd wasn't going to be tops on her agenda.

Tiamat: Great, now I have to rewatch the last scene!

Alias: It's all in good fun. :-) But you seem to be having font size issues tonight! :-)

Lady B: I find benevolence to be good. :-)

Unanswered question from before: What happened to Buffy's phone in her room?

SO to Malista!

Spoiler topic below
*
Buffy has stated more than once that she wants to be "alone." When she comes home all she's ready for is a simple shopping trip with Willow (who flakes) and at most a quiet dinner with just the gang. Instead, her mother invites a stranger to dinner and her friends decide to turn it into a keg party.(presumably to avoid talking to her one-on-one)
Why was Giles the only one who voted for a "cheese" night, and told everybody not to "grill" Buffy about where she had been? Is it-
a. Just his nature
b. because he understands her better?

Alias: Hello there! About KMFrye: Yes, you missed him. Yes, you missed him. ;-) BTW, I think that you just summed up what the perfect description of Anne should be. And why I thought it was really an excellent ep, because of how well it did what it had to do. A great quote from Mortal Combat: "And now a taste of things to come!" It was a total bridge ep. Taking us from B2 and sending us into the entire season. Little things were there, near cameos from charaters past (and I believe) future were riddled throughout. Other than the overlong homeless person thing on the streets, there were no wasted lines or shots. Everything had a reason and fit a purpose, be it immediate, past, or future, the writing was tight as hell. And it was easy to have that lost by looking at the ep as a demon ep, or a homeless ep, and not an amalgamation of the seires from B2 (and bits before) through ep whatever this season.

Alex: I only know that ep 7 was not written by Marti Noxon. Her next two eps are 4 and 9. See ya in LV!

Mircalla: Understood. :-) Night!

AKA Becker: Hi and thanks for clarifying your opinion. I was having trouble keeping all of the opposing viewpoints straight, as crossreferencing is not one of my hobbies, and I'm still processing tonight's excellent episode.

**Spoiler**

We had portents of the Xander speech a couple of times before it happened, once as they went to see Giles Xander makes a joke about hiding or getting out of the way and when they were examining the cat he is clearly pissed off (or not interested) with trying to console Buffy at her house the next night. With Cordy around he can supress his anger but the Joyce rant brings it up really quickly. This is a riviting scene and made me hold my breath. Buffy's being kicked when she is down and it's hard to take because we know more than Xander about the final fight with Angelus and the gut-wrenching decision Buffy had to make in sacrificing her love for the sake of the world. When I was 17 I kept making the same mistakes too. Eventually I wised up. It was harsh on Buffy but in the end I think she needed to hear that kind of honest criticism from her friends. Though perhaps not from Joyce, but after all she had had schnaaps and her tongue was loose.

It kinda supports the feeling I had re: Anne, that it seemed like an episode that was "tacked on" to the begining. I sense a huge momentum building because I got the feeling that when Buffy finally tells the Gang that she had to "kill" Angel, the emotional s**t will hit the fan. They will be sorry the judged her actions so harshly and will put her duties (which Xander seemed so proud of himelf for assuming) into better perspective.

Alias! Hey there, man! :) How goes??

K, I agree with damn near everything you said... personally, I'd rather have seen Giles pull a "Ripper" on Snyder... but that would have been an almost sexual thrill... can't have that! ;-)

And personally, I don't think ANY of the relationship problems were resolved... Giles, Cordy, and Oz seemed to be the only ones who "appeared" to be moving on, and supporting her (perhaps they were the only ones who realized what she was going thru, or just more supportive that the others??)... Willow and Buffy seemed to be beginning, and there was nothing said about Buffy and Xander... and by the way, I think X was a little harsh on the Buffster... but he's a guy, and Willow's bud, and probably still has a deep-seeded thing for the Buffster, and...

Sorry... rambling a bit there, huh?? :)

IMHO, "Dead Man" (I belive thats the title of the ep) was far superior to "Anne". With the events that happened tonight, "Anne" was relegated to a foreshadowing of things to come.
Things that made this ep great for me?
The Scooby Gangs reaction
Thats how real people react to a situation like that. Buffy won't talk and they are confused and hurt and don't understand. You can be as compassionate as you wish but your still gonna be sore.
Giles
Do I need to explain this? Giles slamming Snyder had me cheering.
The Overall Story
It was good. The story was tight, it tied up most of the loose ends as far as the Scooby gang goes towards Buffy. The only exception is how Giles will react to her.
As I said, IMHO, and keeping this short, I felt that this ep relegated "Anne" to simple foreshadowing of things to come.
Hats off to Marty!

Mircalla: :-) I'm not angry, just having issue issues. :-) I knew that that is whta you meant in that line you just fixed. I just saw that I misspelled your name before. ACK!

Doin' that SPOILER thang

Just because I think that what Buffy did was wrong doesn't mean it's not a normal human thing to do. It's not to say that she should be shot or condemned to hell. I just feel that it was wrong to do what she did, and just get yelled at, moe or lest justly by her friends, who she alienated, is not too harsh a punishment for putting the world's future at stake. Yes, she has a breaking point, yest she reached it. Yes she felt she had to leave. but she just has to get it through her heard that she just can't do that. She keeps almost learning that. Every third ep, she leanrs just how important she is, that this is her duty, not her job, that it is a part of her and who she is, not something someone is asking her to do, but she keeps refusing to learn that lesson. Is that unbelievable? No. Is that something she has to deal with to grow, to mature, to becaome a better Slayer and person and to come to some kind of peace with the fact that, until she dies, she is the Slayer? Absolutely. Can I understand her doing what she did? Yes, but I cannot condone it. And as I have said before, I've been on both sides of as similar a thng as you can get without delving into supernatural stuff. The whole thing was handled badly by everyone, but it was some of the most realistic writing on TV, so of couse zombies had to break in on it. :-) I hope this clears up my stance on this issue and that I'm not totally missing the point of the opposing viewpoints, but that I hope you can see and understand where my view is coming from and what I find wrong about this opposing viewpoint. Simply, in RL terms, if I was Willow or Xander, I'd be pissed off at Buffy. I'm not even sure if I could hold out until after she tried to run away a second time before I let her know how pissed I was. I'd let her know why I was pissed and after we both yelled at each other and said our sides, a few days later of dealiing with it, and little spats, I'd forgive her and get over it and be friends again. But I'd still be upset, and feel justified in it. Then again, I'm not good at grudge holding.

Topic- As of right now, this is what I think the Scooby Gang knows about the end result of Angelus/Acathla-

If Giles and Xander went back to the Mansion, they saw not only that Acathla was dormant, but that the sword had been removed. Which leads them to the conclusion that once Giles unwittingly spilled the beans, Angelus indeed did pull it out. I'm sure that Giles figured out that it would take Angelus's blood to close it also and that Buffy must have staked him to do so.
This being the case-

Was it more than callous of Xander to chalk up Buffy's having to stake "Angelus" (as he knew it) as "boy troubles." -OR- Was it to be expected because Buffy did indicate in B1&2 that she was ready to stake him.? "I want it over with." etc.

Sam--she knew spike wanted to get drusilla away from her. spike was the one who wanted to skip town, she didn't demand it.

in WSWB, she pushed them away to protect them. if they weren't around, they wouldn't be in the line of fire--that's why she hurt them. show me some evidence that this isn't true.

and there isn't a shred of evidence what so ever offered in any episode that she left town in B2 to hurt anyone. she needed time away, and with angelus gone especially they weren't in any real danger--also, i know this hasn't been ever pointed out, but she stayed in sunnydale for a few days between leaving her moms house and getting on the bus. i know this because giles and willow were in school. with how beat up giles was, that certainly wasn't the same day. and i doubt willow was released a few hours after waking up. buffy obviously stayed hidden long enough to make sure everything was safe before fleeing--she didn't leave right away

Alex: Droll, very droll. I've never said that "I" would do this or that. After all, I can't manage my own uneventful existence. But I can analyze, from the outside of a situation, anyone can, and I point out what should have been done and why Buffy ignores her duties. Something that should be second nature to her.

Blackheart: Nice, but your analogy lacks sense. A liabilty yes, but if that were her reason for leaving she'd have skipped town long ago.

Buffy is incapable of recognizing her weakness, even when it has been pointed out time and time again. With how tonight's epsiode ended we're no nearer to Buffy's great awaking than we were when "WttH" premiered. Arguments and feelings the gang had mustered up over the summer and since her return had finally reached the point of confrontation and were dropped.

Bruces Mom: ...and she should believe Spike and Dru had skipped town because? The fact is she didn't bother to stick around because she wasn't worried about their well being. Just their reaction to her absence. Hence her watching them before getting on the bus, she wanted to see them hurt and confused.

As illustrated by "WSWB" Buffy vents her feelings by hurting those in the gang. Last year it was verbal and with pushing them away. This year she graduated to killing them, which was more likely than you chose to acknowledge.

AKA BECKER: Angry? Are you really angry? Cause I don't want to debate if people are going to get pissed for real...okay, call me chicken, but I'm a nonconfrontational gal at heart...I agree w/you about Buffy's SECOND runaway attempt. Had she just thrown herself on the bed and had a good cry I would have been sympathetic. I thought that she had explored her issues in Anne, and dealt with (at least some of) them. But I still maintain that I sympathize w/her initial decision, and I don't necessarily agree w/her interpretation of her statement to Lily/Chantarelle. I'm not saying that she necessarily made the best decision possible in running away, but I do think that she was suffering from what Blackheart so eloquently called "combat fatigue". An emotionally destroyed soldier is a bad soldier. And bad soldiers...die. They also endanger those around them. So, I'm w/you on the second attempt, but not on the first.
