I like Joss' comments that they were all right... AND wrong... just like real life... but you always seem to go out of your way to attack Buffy... whom you obviously hate as a character... I am not saying she is perfect... or that she wasn't wrong to just bail... but she received NO empathy from her "friends"... But the first thing that popped into my mind re: Xander's attitutude is that he was punishing Buffy, lashing out at her because she left *him* and because she doesn't love him. It was the same kind of hurt before you get hurt attitude we saw in PG with the remark "I guess a guy's gotta be dead to make time with you." Even if it is understandable at that age and given his maturity level, I still want to give him a good smack on the...patootie. SPOILER BE BELOW SO LOOK THE OTHER WAY 1 2 3 4 5 Okay, my take on last eve's eppy is one of still a lot of unanswered tensions and emotions, much of which bec already brought up ie; no one asked about Acathla and the demise of Angel, hince a lot of Xander guilt coming thru from his rant at the hootenanny. Yes, I can imagine Joyce forming a friendship with another women, but one from a book club type organization? I could see better discussing books but not woes of parenting a 17 year old, unless Pat had a son/daughter in that age group or the been there done that scene. When the cat dug itself out of the grave, all I could think about was Pet Cemetary. Gile's face was awesome in the kitchen and the intro with Night Hawk and the rest of the Scooby Gang after Buffy slayed the vampire with them on the ground was priceless. I surely thought at the end when Willow and Buffy were bonding, mention was going to be made about Angel and the curse restoration, but when they started trading insults, wow it took on a whole new aura, you know how when you have a fight with someone and everything still needs to be discussed but you joke around instead, avoiding the real issues, but lessening the tension in the mean time. One thing that really struck me funny was when Oz and Cordy came out of the closet…..all I could think was "she's in the closet with Oz now? Wuwt?" But I have been assured from sources I will not mention, (you know who you are) that they weren't in there long enough for anything to happen, because studies have been….er….done that it takes at least 30 minutes for blood to boil. Joyce has an awfully big bed for a single woman, don't ya think? *grin* I'm kidding. As for stuntage, I agree there wasn't as much "big" ones, but forget not the "little" ones.; Buffy and Pat going out the window, the zombies busting through the windows, the fight scenes of course, but what I noticed was scenes were the "stars" were accosted by zombies, RE: Seth, I wonder how much practice went into him being grabbed, and pulled without getting hurt. When I thought about it, even litle scenes like Seth being semi-pulled out of the door and thrown to the floor have to be done safely, and cautiously. I've got work to do! :) DMP SPOILERS greengirl: I don't think Buffy expected everyone to be SO happy to see her. Buffy's actions with her friends, with Giles, with her mom.... they were tentative, nervous. She was worried and scared about coming home and being with them. That's what the dream with Angel was all about. She resorted to humor out of nervousness. She was overcompensating by being the dutiful daughter with Joyce at the beginning. She tried to brush it under the rug to avoid the pain and just have "brainless fun." She was extremely unsure of herself and her actions showed this throughout the ep (except when she had to fight, then instinct took over) -- especially when she broke down and started to run away again. I think they all believed that he was still so darned evil when buffy had to slay him. If that's the case, then no wonder they are all so upset with her. They haven't got a clue of the extent of the pain that she went through ... and she wasn't talking, so they had no way to know. Glad to see Giles expressing some paternal emotions. I gotta go along with fenric’s summation of Xander’s attitude, especially with his oh so convenient PDAs with Cordy. It’s like he was trying to say, "See what you could have had. Too bad so sad. So sorry. You snooze, you lose." How petty is that? Now, let me go on record saying that I’m proud of my boy Xander for his discovery of himself and his self esteem. He’s no longer the outcast he was. He is confident, strong, unafraid to stand up for himself, jump into the fray, and lay himself on the line for his friends and others. He’s gained both a personal and physical courage that I find most admirable. But lately his confidence has been coming off as more and more selfish. For instance, if you compare his defense of Willow in WSWB with that from last night, there’s a big difference. In WSWB, his threat to kill Buffy if Willow got hurt was born of a deep-seated love and fondness for Willow, and Buffy’s less than endearing attitude and actions in that episode deserved the harsh determination of Xander’s statement. But last night, there was no threat of genuine harm to defend Willow against. Xander’s quick defense of Willow in the argument (which was rather abrupt and intrusive in itself) seemed to originate from his need to take a self-righteous moral high ground. This was his opportunity to jump on the band wagon and vent all his pent up anger, bitterness, and jealousy concerning Buffy, and it came out ugly. (U…L…G…Y… You ain’t got no alibi. You oogly… yeah yeah… You oogly…). And did you notice the way he quickly took over the whole Buffy bash session? Once he started in, Willow and Joyce could barely get a word in edgewise. I know he’s only 17 years old or so, and still a child in many ways, and you can’t always expect a rational, mature viewpoint from him, but come on. This wasn’t the reaction of a concerned friend trying talk sense into a wayward chum who needs a good dose of "tough love". This was the reaction of a small, bratty child, holding his breath, stomping his feet, and lashing out because he didn’t get to play his game the way he wanted to. He’s definitely got issues to resolve with Buffy, but he’s too afraid or hesitant to sit down with her and discuss them, to get them out in the open, and allow him and her to work through these things like two friends who genuinely care about each other. So it keeps coming out as self-absorbed bitterness. But hey, it’s like I always say. There’s nothing like some good, old fashioned zombie smashing to bring people closer together. * * * ***END OF THIS BATCH OF SPOILER STUFF***

I did wonder about the dead cat and how it got into Buffy's house. Taster's Choice I think this episode worked pretty well as a finale to 'Anne'. 'Anne' found Buffy coming to the realization that she needs to go home, and 'DMP' brought her home, and I'm presuming back in to school, thanks to Ripper. She also pretty much reconciled with Willow, the final scene was hysterical "Freak", "Witch". But there is still a lot to do to get her and Xander back to the way the were (if that's even possible, or desirable). I agree that part of Xander's chewing out of the Buffster might be due to guilt, but he is really glad to see her. When he turned around and saw her there, all he could say was "Buff", and that said a lot. I'm not sure he ever expected to see her again. I don't think he's conciously thought about what will happen when Buffy and Willow compare notes. It might take him by suprise. I am going to have to watch this DMP again to get the full effect of the episode, but I have just a few issues and observances… 1. Giles was excellent! The scene in the beginning when he went to the kitchen to get the tea and cookies - the expression on his face as he silently celebrated Buffy's return just made me want to hug him! What a guy! Loved the toughness of the Giles-mobile. You have to appreciate a car that can hit a zombie and not even dent the hood or break the windshield. These days, you hit a pothole and it costs about $2000 to correct the damage - that car is a keeper! I SO wanted Giles to do the "I'm going to put out the candles" Dru routine on Snyder. That man needs to die a slow, painful death. 2. Xander. So, when did he go from the nerd trying to impress everyone to "me me me!"? What a self-absorbed crybaby. I was relieved to see Joss say that Xander is no longer like him. I have been a Xander fan since the beginning - but I really don't like this new self-absorbed attitude. Maybe he needs … well, nevermind. 3. Joyce the Vampire Slayer? It was nice to see her "allow" Buffy to go with Giles. But a little disturbing too. It looks like she may, by default, become a part of the scooby gang. Doc - I am sure you LOVED last night's episode with all the Joyce action! 4. Loved the beginning where Buff finds the Gang for the 1st time. It was obvious that there would be tension btw Xander and Buff from the beginning. He didn't actually look happy to see her - or maybe it was shock. But the sight of the 4 of them on the ground looking up at her was a hoot! 5. I'm betting by the end of today, we have a new poster by the name of NightHawk. 6. Don't you think that one of the first things the Gang would have asked was "What happened to Angel?" I mean gees! Suspense much? You'd think that Willow would have wanted to know right away if her spell worked. 7. Willow as a witch. Umm … ok. 8. Not as much stuntage in this one. The jury is still out on that part. Overall, not a Top 10 episode, but entertaining and necessary nonetheless. I'm sure I'll like it better the second time I watch it. Most of the time, Buffy was in bright light...but often, especially when characters were in turmoil or sort of hiding their feelings, their faces were half in shadow. I noticed it with Joyce a lot. It was really cool. I said last night that Pat was evil... mostly because I'd just seen her on Caroline in the City the night before playing a demented office manager that was *exactly* like our facilities manager here at work. So Pat = evil immediately. Plus.... something that sickeningly sweet had to be destroyed. Buffy screaming for her mom was perfect... I certainly would have done that. :) Poor Joyce can't find a good friend to save her life .... I liked that something from her gallery played a role in the story. Cosmic Bob I felt sorry for Buffy almost the whole time through... but I wasn't angry at the Slayerettes either (well, okay, on 2nd viewing I did smack Xander with a pillow because he just had *no* idea how little room he had to talk. Anyone else wonder why Willow was trying to contact the spirit world?? Was she trying to talk to Jenny? Or was she trying to see if Angel's spirit was still there to find out if the spell had worked? No... not writing it... out of my brain... out! And dang but Xander has grown up a lot. Besides being "Night Hawk" now *snicker*... he's just more sure of himself. He carries himself more confidently... he speaks his mind and speaks it pretty clearly. He may tick me off when he does it.... but he's definitely growing up. It's nice to see the change in him. He's the one character's whose development has been slowest/most subtle, I think. The entire party discussing scene at the library was my hilarious (save Xander's digression into "she doesn't want to talk, we don't want to talk").... from Cordy's "I'm the dip." to Oz's The Art of Partying speech. "Chock full of hoot, with just a leeetle bit of nanny." teehee. "Smelly cheese party." But I *love* brie!! Also.... Sunnydales expansion rate is *huge* for a town with such a large death toll. My Input on the Xander thing I did think him and everyone were being rouher on buffy than she deserved, they should have relized she is unstable still- but, Xanders reaction, even though I felt he came down on her a little hard without that much cause, was very real- his character was very in touch with his anger, and I totally loved it, cause when I get angry sometimes, thats how I get, very self-rightous and a big speechmaker (hey, it not always the right way to do things) but I felt it was a very real personality trait I also thought they handled buffy very well, she was alone, lonely even though she was home and you could see the sadness inside of her.. I think the only other thing I was kinda hoping for/expecting was her to burst out with how she had killed Angel, not Angelus but her Angel, because none of them know what happened, and I felt it would shut everyone up from attacking her and feel her pain for a minute, that she didn't kill an evil vampire (Angelus), but a creature with a soul, and she did it knowingly . . I might be going out on a limb here and I might change my mind later (after all, it is only the second ep of the season) but I'd have to say that DMP ranks up there in my top five. RAK - When Xander jumped all over Buffy in the livingroom (verbally, folks! geesh.) I saw misplaced guilt. The gang still doesn't know about his role in B2 and he feels guilty about what Buffy went through. What better way not to feel that than to get angry at the person who's causing the guilty feelings? Pat - can we all say "eeew". I found it interesting that she was a touchy-feely new-agey type who ends up getting killed much the same way the Principal Flutie (call me Bob) did. Taster's Choice - I'm not sure if I agree with the "Joyce is a lush" theory. After all, did you see the way her eyes widened when she drank that schnapps? I've never had schnapps, but I'd think if I were used to drinking regularly it wouldn't hit me hard. I loved the whole "gathering, shindig, hootenany" conversation. Classic Scooby Gang. Would you guys say most PBFPs are "gatherings", "shindigs" or "hootenanies"? :-) I wasn't as thrilled with the makeup for the zombies as I was with the demons in "Anne". Zombies are like my one big freak out when it comes to horror, and I thought the eppy was tinged with "Night of the Living Dead" type stuff; the people trapped in the house, the dead converging on the house, the quick shots of undead rising in other areas. Loved it. It was nice to see Joyce get into the "Whupping" action, and get involved. Although I don't subscribe to the "Joyce needs AA" theory, she must have loosened up a heck of alot to allow drinking and smoking in her place. A few observations; 1. For those of you who were on the "Smoking on the show id for bad guys", anyone else notice the guy smoking had his head "Calendered" by the zombie? Looks like any smoking either gets you killed, or handed a black outfit. 2. What happened to all the kids in the house? Did they make it out, or were they appetizers? 3. The makeup was great for the undead. Especially the zombie by the cops. It had head trauma, and had the matching bloodshot eye. Bravo! Okay, so I'm a EMS Geek. 4. So Xander blew up? Might not of been the right time, or place but hey, the guy said what he felt. You can't crucify the guy for that. No matter what, he always says the stuff that no one else wants to say, or is afraid to. Cut him some slack. But that "NightWing" name? 5. Lena: missers you! banshee lover: are you still not getting buffy until the weekend? *smooch* BIG FAT SPOILERS FOR DMP I LOVED this ep-- not b/c it was perfect (I agree: why did their SOs abandon Cordie and Oz downstairs?; Buffy's door was open wider when Willow came up than it had been when she went up there; etc), because it had RHYTHM (I don't agree with Eliza that the first 1/2 dragged- the first Scooby Scene rocked, IMHP), the characters were true to themselves, regardless of whether the perfect person would act that way, the acting was awesome (I had tears in my eyes during the Willow-Buffy scene), and well... Oz has great lines ;-): "I think could manage some Dingo action" or something like that. While Xander and Willow were a bit harsh on Buffy, they're still only teenagers. Xander uses humor and anger to express his emotions, while Willow has a hard time letting her emotions out. You'd think that if their lives were ruined for 3 months, they'd more easily understand Buffy, but that's not the way people work, esp. more egocentric teenagers. More and more Willow's relationship with Buffy seems that of little-big sister, respectively. Willow was missing her big sister, who had helped her change in so many ways and then left her to deal with some of those changes on her own before she felt ready. So, she was hurt and angry. At the same time, little sisters put big sisters on pedestals (I know; I was the little one), and so are loathe to confront the big ones about anger, hurt feelings, the big one's imperfections. That's a scary prospect; so, instead, she tries to avoid dealing with it. As for Giles's reactions-- that's the one that fascinated me the most. Yet again, he seemed to act more the good parent that Joyce, who still doesn't know what to do. Giles had a parent's tremendous relief that his "child" was home, while still feeling hurt that this child rejected him. He understood that Buffy would need to adjust first-- he still put his concern for Buffy over his feelings, which have yet to be aired-- I hope this is not over yet. The Joyce-Buffy scenes always annoy me. That's where there is a little bit of dragging that, for some, may just be the proper awkwardness of teenager-mother interactions. Sometimes I just wanna slap that woman. Was it me, or didn't the acting simply ROCK? Did anybody else think "Thriller" when the zombies were walking through the playground? Spoilers * * * * DMP was a definite improvement over "Anne" and was a welcome return to some of the things we've enjoyed the most about the show. Buffy and the Slayerettes intereacting (more on that in a second), Giles showing his human side (the snide comments in the car were priceless) and Joyce showing her true col-ors (more on that as well. There's been a fair amount of discussion concerning who was right/wrong during the Xander/Joyce/Buffy argument. Here's my $.02. Poor Xander, how horrible that his summer was ruined because Buffy left him. Boo Hoo! With that comment Xander once again proves that he has the maturity level and emotional development of a grade school student not a high school student. At least I could sympathize with Willow, who conceded she didn't understand what Buffy was going through, (and was anyone else sorry Joyce interrupted what would've been a great scene in Buffy's bedroom), but nevertheless was still disappointed, angry and hurt by Buffy leaving. By contrast Xander wouldn't even consider the possibility that Buffy might've had a legitmate reason to leave. Instead, he was so into himself (Nighthawk?) and Cordelia that all he could do was shout meaningless platitudes and insults at her. It's clear from his words that he doesn't understand or (and this is more likely) doesn't care about Buffy's feelings for Angel. He's totally consumed by his hatred of Angel. So much so that now that Angel is gone Xander has transferred his anger (towards Angel) to Buffy. Lastly, I found it interesting at how quickly Xander condemned Buffy for keeping things from the Slayerettes. I wonder if the other's will be as quick to condemn him when they find out that his lie indirectly contributed to Buffy leaving. Now, on the Joyce matter, talk about "issues". Joyce is practicing an interesting form of revisionist history. "You didn't give me time to understand." (may not be an exact qoute)) Excuse me, what's that all about? If I remember correctly, Buffy needed to go save the world. . . again. But then, I guess Joyce would've preferred the world go to Hell (literally) just so she could understand her daughter. Talk about selfish. Overall, I found Joyce's act even more tiresome (although it was a close call) than Xander's. If that was Joyce's idea of welcoming her daughter back with compassion and love then Buffy would be better off if Joyce just continued to drink herself into a self-denying stupor and left her alone. To summarize, while I certainly don't believe that Buffy is blameless in all of this (at the very least she could've called to let everyone know she was okay) I do think the Slayerette's (especially Xander) and Joyce were way too harsh on her. * * * * End Spoilers See Ya! I think that they should not have killed off all the good characters at the beginning. They should have found a better way to begin the new season. I like the show, I have just about all on tape, but this is really becoming stupid. Too many people know who Buffy really is now. That sort of takes the fun out of it. And where are Spike & Dru. We know Angel is in Hell, but why take all the good characters off the show. I am truly disappointed in the turn the show has taken. Maybe it will get better.

It raises the dead!….Americans!"….this was not only my favorite Giles line - but my favorite line in the episode altogether....I loved it!....but, although I like Giles, I disagree with the way he handled Buffy's return….Giles may be emotionally restrained - but it was still up to him to tell Buffy that she had shirked her responsibility, and that that was not okay....he didn't have to yell & do it like Xander did - but these things needed to be said.... I have only read Joss' comments and haven't scanned the board yet, but I'm sure someone out there might agree with me when I say, The gang and Joyce were way, way too harsh to Buffy. While watching the party scene, I got the feeling that buffy wasn't wanted. I could feel the rejection during that scene. In her shoes, I probably would have gone up and packed my things too. It seemed to me that noone was even trying at all to consider what she might be going through. I realize they were all feeling abandoned by her but It's not like she got upset because her mother grounded her and decided to run away. She has the weight of life and death situations on her shoulders topped of by having to kill the man she loved to save the world. (I am seriously understating her situation here) I think a breakdown of some sort was inevitable. Giles seems to be the only one who might be able to identify with what she going through, and I think Joss kept him out of the confrontation for a reason. Devil sets her mug o'espresso and backpack in a secluded corner booth, pulls a clean sweater out of her booth, ducks into a bathroom, and meerges wearing the clean sweater and holding the bloodied shirt in her hands. She stuffs the dirty shirt in her backpack, first attaching a note that says, "Dry clean me," says out loud, "It'sgood to come prepared," and sucks down her epsresso. Good morning, all! Lady Bathory, Mircalla To be honest, the Angel/Xander/wrestling/Speedo/Cool Whip scenario was Closet Buffyholic's creation, so you've gotta igve her all the credit. I just wanted to keep such a wonderfully delicious image alive. SPOILERISH BELOW deadguy, the sequel In this particular case, there are several reasons why Cordy is the one sticking up for Buffy. First and foremost, in general, Cordy has stood by Buffy when the chips are down because they actually have a lot in common, or at least used to. Remember, Buffy was Cordy before she was called to be the Slayer. As demonstrated in IG, even in Season 1, Cordy wasn't 100% hapy with being the popular girl, and Buffy understood exactly where she was coming from. I think Cordy respects Buffy a lot, because Buffy was forced to transcend the "popular girl" thing and move on to a higher calling, and despite her reluctance and kvetching, for the most part is good about fulfilling her duty. Perhaps Cordy feels she can learn something from Buffy about how to go beyond all the shallow stuff popularity, especially in high school entails. In B2, Cordy acknowledged to Buffy in the hospital that she, unlike Buffy, did the cowardly thing, and the way she said it implied that she didn't have a lot of self-respect for running, and all the more respect for Buffy for fighting the vampires. Because of this respect, Cordy really wants to become better friends with Buffy, which is why she first said to Xander, "I'm doing this for Buffy, not for you," in "Anne,"--there I think Cordy was helping with the slayage for bothof them--and thes trying to empathize with Buffy, albeit failing miserably, in DMP (or DgP?). I’m one of those who thought that ‘Anne’, while possessing a few moments of brilliance (the long shot at Sunnydale High, the fight), had real flaws. It was great to see the show back up to full speed again in ‘DMP’ 2. I never got a chance to mention this last week, but the new Title Sequence kicks @$$! 3. I’m so glad that the Scooby Gang didn’t just welcome Buffy back with open arms – it was much more real and made for much better television. 4. Joycie is a monumentally self-absorbed parent. OK, it’s early, but I still feel a need to chime in with my observations from last nights new ‘Buffy’… ***Careful where you step. I spilt a big jug of SPOILERS down here*** * * * * OK, I gotta say this. The older Xander gets, the less I like him. You know, he started out as a social outcast of sorts, not being accepted into any of the "cool" cliques, and just a tad bit on the nerdy side. He was unsure of himself, vulnerable, and wanted nothing more than to be liked and accepted. And he endeared himself to us quickly, because I think many of us could relate to him personally. With each season, he’s been growing up and gaining self confidence, which would normally make me give him a "you go boy" pat on the back. But he also seems to be degenerating into something else. Last night’s episode showed a side of Xander that wasn’t so endearing, one that’s been developing subtly since last season. His cavalier attitude toward Buffy’s return and subsequent tantrum at her party, to me, came off as self-centered and self righteous. I got the impression that his venting at Buffy, taking up for everybody else (her mom, Willow, etc.) was more about how he felt betrayed, as if Buffy’s departure was a personal affront against him. It’s all about him. He has no understanding of what was going on inside Buffy, and frankly, he didn’t seem to care. All that mattered was that he got his feelings hurt. I know that the entire gang was hurt by Buffy’s sudden departure, and it’s hard to just let it go and let it run off you like water off a duck’s back, but get off your soap box Brother Xander. We ain’t holding any hymnals and the offering plate isn’t being passed around. Or maybe he was just venting some misplaced anger. Maybe he knows deep down inside that he was partly to blame for her leaving. If he had told Buffy about Willow’s plans to give Angel his soul back, she wouldn’t of had to kill him, and she never would of left (of course, we all know that she had no choice in killing Angel, but Xander didn’t know that). So maybe he’s just angry at himself, and just can’t recognize that. It just seems that of all the regular characters, Xander is the only one who isn’t maturing and developing in a positive way. Of course, that’s just one more thing that makes this show so darn interesting. And can we say "HURRAY!" to Buffy for dispatching of Pat so quickly. Come on, if Pat had turned into a reoccurring character… ewwww. Now that would have been annoying. Of course, the humor pump was primed for the occasional pairings of Buffy and Pat. Blackheart, Alex, etc ie Xander: Be truthful do you always put yourself in your friends shoes when they are going through a tough time? Especially if you don't understand it or don't care to. I'm still a little confused about last nites ep, I saw alot of self absorbing done by Willow and Xander, WUWT? I heard alot of "where were you when I needed you" from the W/X. High marks to Lady B., Alex, et al for insight. My own take on him is a little more jaundiced. To me he's a study in opposites. He's strong, independent, and has the courage to jump into an open blast furnace, if need be, to defend his friends. He also has has all emotional maturity and egocentricity of a six year old. Of the three women in his life he's managed to hammer two of them with his emotional short sightedness. And halfway hammer the third with divided loyalties. A problem that he was showing signs of overcoming, but which is still there. The real Xander hasn't stood up yet I think. And won't until the events of the Becoming are fully recounted to the gang. Until then I'm letting my dislike of him go for the fact that his warrior persona did a job of work leading the gang in filling Buffy's shoes. What he does when he learns the full extent of Buffy's agony will tell us whether he's matured as much as I hope he has. To be honest I think his involvement with Cordy has gone a long way toward weaning him of his Buffy fixation. But the hatred of Angel that established itself early on because he had Buffy and Xander didn't was still there. Not because of any rational basis, but because hating without cause was easier than examining his own motivations and overcoming them. A very human flaw.
